When an affair comes to light, both people in the relationship are suddenly in pain — but not the same pain. One partner is reeling from betrayal. The other is facing what they did and wondering whether it can be undone. Most advice about affair recovery speaks to both of you at once, as if you were standing in the same place. You aren’t.
That’s why I wrote The Repair Work as two separate workbooks.
Why one book for both partners doesn’t work
After infidelity, the betrayed partner and the unfaithful partner have different jobs. Asking them to work from the same page often means one person’s needs get crowded out by the other’s.
- The betrayed partner is often dealing with shock, intrusive images, sleeplessness, anger that comes in waves, and a deep uncertainty about what was real. Their work is to steady themselves, make sense of what happened, and decide — on their own timeline — what they need.
- The unfaithful partner is often dealing with shame, defensiveness, and the urge to rush past the pain to “moving on.” Their work is to take full responsibility, tolerate their partner’s hurt without minimizing it, and rebuild trust through consistent action over time.
Both jobs matter. They just aren’t the same job.
What The Repair Work is
The Repair Work is a Rupture Repair Protocol written in two volumes — one for each partner. Each workbook speaks directly to the person holding it, in language meant for where they actually are, and walks them through structured reflection and guided worksheets.
- The Repair Work — For the Betrayed is for the partner who was hurt. It’s a place to process what happened without having to protect anyone else’s feelings while you do it.
- The Repair Work — For the Unfaithful Partner is for the partner who broke the agreement. It’s about accountability, not self-punishment — understanding what led there and showing up differently.
Each workbook comes with its complete printable worksheet set included free. You can work through them on your own, side by side with your partner, or alongside a couples counselor.
Who it’s for
- Couples who have decided to try to rebuild after an affair, or who are still deciding.
- A betrayed partner who wants support for themselves, whether or not the relationship continues.
- An unfaithful partner who wants to do the work honestly instead of just asking to be forgiven.
- Counselors looking for structured between-session work for clients in affair recovery.
You don’t need your partner’s participation to start your half of the work.
What repair actually takes
Trust after betrayal isn’t rebuilt with one big apology. It’s rebuilt in small, repeated moments: answering a hard question honestly, staying present when your partner is hurting, following through on what you said you’d do. For the betrayed partner, it means giving yourself permission to heal at your own pace rather than on anyone else’s schedule.
The workbooks don’t promise that every relationship will survive an affair. They’re designed to help each of you get clear — about what happened, what you need, and what you’re each willing to do — so that whatever you decide, you decide it with your eyes open.
